Observations:

The home presents a set of design challenges. Low ceilings and small, segmented rooms contribute to a confined feeling. The presence of original stained oak elements like the floors, trim, and doors, along with traditional oak kitchen cabinets in , establishes a strong traditional foundation.

Recommendations to make ceilings look higher

Designing and living with low ceilings can indeed be a challenge, but with the right strategies and creativity, we can make the most of the space and even create a cozy and unique atmosphere. Here are some ideas to consider:

  1. Vertical Lines and Stripes: We will use vertical lines, stripes, or patterns on walls and furnishings to create an illusion of height. This draws the eye upward and makes the room appear taller (curtains)

  2. Light Colors: We will Opt for light and neutral colors for walls, ceilings. Light colors reflect more light and create a sense of openness, making the space feel less confined.

  3. We should avoid Heavy Curtains: Choose lightweight curtains or blinds. Heavy drapes can make the ceiling feel lower.

  4. Low Furniture: Opt for lower furniture pieces that complement the scale of the room. High-backed chairs and large low cabinets can emphasize the low ceiling.

  5. Minimalistic Approach: Embrace a minimalistic design. Clutter-free spaces create an airy feeling, making the room seem more spacious.

  6. Vertical Storage: We will utilize vertical storage solutions to free up floor space and draw the gaze upward. Tall bookshelves or cabinets can serve this purpose well.

  7. Mirrors: Strategically placing mirrors on walls can reflect light and create an illusion of depth, making the ceiling feel higher.

  8. Raising Decorations: Hang decorations right height draw attention away from the lower ceiling. Avoid heavy decorations (heavy frames etc) that might weigh down the space.

  9. Floor-to-Ceiling Windows: If possible, incorporate large windows or trim that reach from the floor to the ceiling. This creates a connection to the outdoors, making the ceiling height feel less significant. (trim work?)

  10. Cove Lighting: I recommend Install cove lighting or indirect lighting around the perimeter of the room. This can visually lift the ceiling and add a touch of elegance. (Cove lighting is a type of architectural lighting design that involves installing light fixtures in a recessed area, or cove, typically located near the ceiling. The purpose of cove lighting is to provide indirect illumination that softly washes the walls and ceiling, creating a subtle and ambient glow in a room. It's often used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space, add visual interest, and create a sense of depth and height)

  11. Furniture Arrangement: Arrange furniture to keep the center of the room open (coffee table with glass, see through) This helps prevent the space from feeling cramped and emphasizes the floor area.

  12. Avoid Heavy Patterns: Avoid using heavy and busy patterns on walls or ceilings, as they can make the space feel more confined.

Remember that the goal is not necessarily to make the ceiling appear higher but to create a comfortable and visually pleasing environment that embraces the unique qualities of the space. By being mindful of design elements and choosing furnishings wisely, you can transform a room with low ceilings into a charming and cozy retreat.

Recommendations to improve flow and visually expand the space:

Dealing with small, choppy rooms on the main level of a house can be challenging, but with thoughtful design strategies, we can make the most of the space and create a cohesive and functional layout. Here are some ideas to help you overcome this challenge:

  1. Consistent Flooring: Use the same type of flooring throughout the main level to create a sense of continuity and visual flow. This will make the space feel more unified and less fragmented.

  2. Light Colors: Opt for light, neutral colors on walls, ceilings, and furnishings. Light colors can make rooms feel larger and airier by reflecting more light.

  3. Multi-Functional Furniture:  furniture that serves multiple purposes. For example, a dining table with leaves that can be extended for guests, or a sofa with built-in storage.

  4. Strategic Placement of furniture, to maximize open pathways and maintain an easy flow between and in the rooms.

  5. Furniture Scale: Select appropriately scaled furniture that fits the size of the rooms. Avoid overly large pieces that can make the space feel cramped.

  6. Utilize Vertical Space: we will Install tall bookshelves or cabinets to take advantage of vertical space for storage. This keeps the floor area clear and helps draw the eye upward.

  7. Mirrors: recommend using mirrors strategically to reflect light and create the illusion of larger space. Placing mirrors opposite windows can also bring more natural light into the room.

  8. Integrated Storage: Opt for built-in storage solutions whenever possible. Customized cabinets and shelving will be designed to fit the unique layout of the rooms.

  9. Lighting Design: Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to brighten up the space and create visual interest. Pendant lights and wall sconces can save floor space.

  10. Minimize Clutter: Keep the decor minimal and avoid overcrowding the rooms with too many decorations. Clutter can make small spaces feel even smaller.

  11. Monochromatic Color Scheme: Stick to a monochromatic color scheme with variations of the same color. This creates a harmonious and unifying look that visually expands the space.

Remember that the goal is to make the space feel cohesive and functional while minimizing the feeling of confinement, tailor these ideas to your personal style and needs to transform your small, choppy rooms into an inviting and well-organized main level.

Recommendations to address lack of storage space:

1.Design custom-built storage solutions tailored to the specific dimensions of the rooms.

2.Utilize alcoves and corners for built-in shelves or cabinets.

3.Invest in under-bed storage containers or beds with built-in drawers.
